Lo strumento è costituito da una composizione di differenti campioni di tessuto che si muovono su una serie di rulli motorizzati. L’installazione interattiva riproduce dei “loop” multipli di tessuto, alcuni sensori di luce sono utilizzati per generare i suoni ed è la qualità e la densità del tessuto a determinare l’altezza e il ritmo del sonoro. Ad esempio, il numero di fili che interrompono la luce ogni secondo determinano l’altezza del suono. Fabric Machine effettua una ricerca delle strutture musicaliche nascoste nella trama e nella composizione dei tessuti.
Degli artefatti culturali come i tessuti divengono così il “database informativo” dell’interfaccia dell’installazione sonora. Il pattern e la tessitura del materiale sono i responsabili degli algoritmi di generazione elettroacustica del suono. Il modo in cui i pezzi di stoffa sono cuciti insieme genera invece le battute, le pause e ritmi della partitura.

The instrument consists of a composition of differing fabric samples move along the installation by a number of motor driven rollers. The interactive installation plays multiple loops of fabric. Light sensors are used to generate the sounds and the quality and density of the cloth determine the pitch and the rhythm of the sound. So for example, the number of threads interrupting the light per second determine the pitch of the sound. Fabric Machine untertakes a search for the musical structures found in the texture and composition of fabrics. Cultural artefacts like textiles become the data storage in the sound installation´s interface.
The material´s woven pattern and thread count is responsible for the algorithms of electro- acoustic sound generation. The way in which the pieces of cloth have been sewn together is responsible for beats, breaks, and rhytms in the score. The machine can be exhibited as an interactive installation, and the artist performs live using it to play various composed fabric- tracks

Kathrin Stumreich, (nata nel 1976) studia e lavora a Vienna e a Innsbruck, in Austria.
Si è laureata nel 1998 in Filosofia ed Etnologia presso l’Università di Vienna e dal 2008 studia presso l’Università di Arti Applicate di Vienna presso il Dipartimento per l’arte digitale.
Con i suoi lavori ha partecipato a diverse conferenze e festival internazionali come NIME, Ars Electronica ed ha pubblicato i suoi lavori in svariati contesti espositivi in tutto il mondo.

Kathrin Stumreich, (born 1976) studies and works in Vienna, in Innsbruck/Austria.
She graduated in 1998 in Philosophy and Ethnology at the University Vienna and since 2008 she studies at University for Applied Arts Vienna, Departement for digital art.
She attends with her works at several international conferences and festivals like NIME, Ars Electronica and takes part in many exhibition worldwide.
